Miami’s economy is evolving fast, and one of its most powerful engines has been here all along: its military community.
With Homestead Air Reserve Base and U.S. Southern Command anchoring Miami-Dade’s national defense presence, the military contributes billions in annual economic impact to the region. But the greatest value doesn’t come from equipment or installations, it comes from people.
More than 45,000 veterans live in Miami-Dade County, bringing unmatched experience in logistics, cybersecurity, emergency response, aviation, engineering, and leadership. These industries are defining Miami’s future, and veterans are ready to lead.
Recognizing Rising Talent: Women Veterans
At Opportunity Miami, our mission is to unlock economic mobility by investing in people. That means building talent pipelines that reflect both the future we want and the talent we already have. Veterans are an essential part of that vision.
Among Miami’s military-connected population, women veterans are among the fastest-growing and most dynamic groups. Nationally, over two million women have served in the U.S. military—but too often, they return to civilian life without the visibility, access, or recognition their experience deserves.
That’s changing.
June 12th: Where Opportunity Meets Action
On Thursday, June 12th, is the Women Are Veterans Too: Powering Miami’s Future summit at Homestead City Hall. The gathering will spotlight the leadership and potential of 50 outstanding women veterans while providing a platform to connect veterans with job opportunities, business resources, and career advancement.
Hosted by the South Dade Women Veterans Alliance, the Miami-Dade Beacon Council, and Opportunity Miami, this event brings together local leaders, employers, and residents to engage directly with a workforce ready to deliver for Miami.
“This summit aims to empower women veterans and raise awareness about the unique challenges they face,” said Julie Robison, Founder of the South Dade Women Veterans Alliance, “while also fostering connections within the community.”
“Veterans are mission-ready talent, proven under pressure and shaped by some of the toughest, most demanding environments,” said Rodrick T. Miller, President & CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. “When they transition to business, they bring the leadership, crisis-management skills, and results-driven mindset that translate seamlessly to the corporate world and help lead the charge for a more resilient, forward-moving Miami.”
