At Opportunity Miami, our mission is clear: build a sustainable, inclusive future anchored in innovation, talent, and entrepreneurship. As the world rethinks how cities prepare for growth and climate resilience, Miami stands at the intersection of bold ideas and real opportunity.
We believe talent drives everything. Entrepreneurship builds community wealth. And sustainability isn’t optional—it’s expected. These priorities guide our work across industries and institutions.
But one of Miami’s most surprising superpowers? Tourism.
Where Visitors Become Builders
When 12,000 Adobe employees flew into Miami for a global convention, they weren’t just here for business. They were immersed in the city’s energy—its culture, its creativity, and its potential. And according to David Whitaker, President & CEO of the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), that moment matters.
“Most of those people might have been here for the first time. They see the destination… and that creates better interest for perhaps expanding and investing here,” he said in our latest Opportunity Miami Interview.
That’s the driving force behind the “Brought to You by Tourism” campaign: a powerful reminder that every visitor might be a future investor, founder, or resident.
In a region where quality of life and business opportunities converge, tourism is more than a side story. Listen or watch here to learn how tourism aligns with the three pillars of Opportunity Miami: sustainability, talent, and entrepreneurship.
Green is the New Standard
As more travelers seek values-aligned experiences, sustainability has become essential. That’s why GMCVB launched the Green Key certification program, bringing rigorous environmental standards to Miami’s hotel industry.
“It’s like getting that Michelin star,” Whitaker said. “We’ve got 17 certified, 100 in process. My goal is for all 200-plus hotels to be green certified.”
Sustainability is now a top question from meeting planners, corporate event hosts, and global visitors, he noted.
“It’s the right thing to do for our future—but it’s also what our customers are expecting.”
Opportunity Miami’s focus on risk and resilience is directly reflected in this movement. The convention center’s upcoming connected 800-room host hotel—another game-changer—will double or triple planner interest. Sustainability will be a deciding factor in winning their business.
People First: Talent Is the True Asset
One in ten jobs in Miami-Dade County is powered by tourism. But the real story is who those jobs belong to: a deeply diverse, multilingual, and entrepreneurial workforce.
“Talent drives everything,” Whitaker said. “And in Miami, that talent is as vibrant and diverse as the city itself.”
Opportunity Miami’s workforce and talent agenda recognizes that for Miami to remain a world-class destination, it must also be a world-class place to work. That means investing in training, promoting upward mobility, and ensuring affordability and access—so the same people who make Miami unforgettable can continue to call it home.
Entrepreneurs Welcome: Tourism as a Launchpad
While major brands make headlines, it’s Miami’s entrepreneurs that animate the city’s streets, kitchens, and galleries. The hospitality industry is an engine for entrepreneurship—particularly for historically underrepresented communities.
“Other than the big box hotels, our industry is full of small businesses. That’s where some of our most focused work is—in helping them become tourism-ready,” Whitaker shared.
That includes workshops, training, and even website development to get small businesses in front of visitors actively seeking authentic, local experiences. From website help to hands-on training, GMCVB is supporting local entrepreneurs in capturing the attention of Miami’s 27+ million annual visitors. With Opportunity Miami’s entrepreneurship pillar aligned, we’re building a pipeline at the community level that scales when given visibility and support.
A Strategic Partnership: Tourism + Economic Growth
Recognizing this potential, GMCVB and the Miami-Dade Beacon Council have forged a formal partnership to align tourism with economic development. That synergy is now strategic and deliberate.
“You’re recruiting companies to take a real hard look at investing and being here,” Whitaker said. “That opens the door for them to have their convention here, or a convention of their peers. So both sides win.”
It’s a playbook for cities competing on the global stage: talent attraction through visitor experience, investment via lifestyle exposure, and business growth fueled by connection.
A City Built by Visitors, Elevated by Vision
In Miami, every hotel stay, every beach day, every downtown conference is more than a moment—it’s a gateway. A visitor becomes a founder. A tourist becomes a resident. A spark becomes a stake in the city’s future.
So the next time a plane lands at MIA, or a convention kicks off downtown, remember: we’re not just welcoming visitors. We’re planting the seeds of Miami’s future—one story, one experience, one dream at a time.
In exchange, we find the heartbeat of our collective mission:
🌱 A sustainable future
💡 A talent-driven economy
🚀 An entrepreneurial city
🏝 All brought to you, by tourism.
