Learn how Zulu Pods is pioneering aerospace innovation from South Florida in our latest interview with co-founder Daniella Sladen.
As the new year begins, Opportunity Miami continues its transformative mission, driving progress through three key pillars: Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Talent and Inclusion, and Sustainability and Net Zero. These priorities aim to position South Florida as a global leader in economic opportunity, resilience, and equity. One story capturing the essence of these pillars is that of Zulu Pods, an aerospace startup redefining jet engine technology and paving the way for a more sustainable future.
Co-founded by Latina aerospace engineer Daniella Sladen, Zulu Pods is revolutionizing the aviation industry with innovative solutions that are cost-effective, sustainable, and transformative.

A Vision of Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Zulu Pods was born from a moment of inspiration during a family road trip. Sladen and her husband, both aerospace engineers, recognized that smaller jet engines didn’t need the complex and bulky lubrication systems traditionally used in aviation. Instead, they envisioned a packaged oil delivery system that provides the precise amount of oil needed for optimal engine performance.
“Traditional systems rely on gallons of oil, but our pods reduce that to milliliters,” Sladen explained. “This not only saves weight and cost but also improves performance. For applications like military helicopters, our pods provide the critical last burst of lubrication to safely land in emergencies.”
Founded in 2020, Zulu Pods has achieved key milestones, including securing Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from the Army and Navy, completing proof-of-concept testing, and attracting capital partners. With a strong foundation, the company is expanding into the commercial aviation market with innovations like its anti-corrosion pod.
South Florida: A Thriving Aerospace Hub
South Florida has become a hotspot for aerospace innovation, with the region experiencing a 15% growth in aerospace businesses over the past five years. Florida is home to over 500 aerospace and aviation companies, employing over 92,000 industry workers statewide.
Zulu Pods has thrived in this ecosystem, leveraging resources like the Florida Venture Forum and events like eMerge Americas to connect with investors and showcase its groundbreaking technology.
“Being based in South Florida has been invaluable,” said Sladen. “The access to resources, capital, and a supportive innovation network has helped us scale and grow.”
With plans to open a new office in South Florida, Zulu Pods is poised to deepen its impact on Miami-Dade’s growing aerospace sector.
Empowering Talent Through Inclusion
Sladen’s journey is a testament to Opportunity Miami’s focus on inclusivity. Aerospace engineers are primarily male and about ten percent of the workforce is Hispanic.
As a Latina in a male-dominated industry, she has defied expectations, proving that diversity drives innovation.
“When I returned to work after becoming a mother, people assumed I’d step back from my career,” Sladen shared. “That only motivated me more. I wanted to show my children—and others—that women, especially women of color, belong in leadership roles in STEM.”
Zulu Pods fosters an inclusive culture by ensuring employees engage in both design and hands-on work, creating well-rounded engineers. This approach reflects Miami’s commitment to developing top-tier talent and empowering individuals from all backgrounds to succeed in high-demand fields.
Driving Sustainability and Net Zero Goals
Zulu Pods’ technology directly supports global sustainability efforts by reducing oil consumption in jet engines. This lowers costs and minimizes environmental impact.
“Our technology drastically cuts oil usage, helping aviation reduce its carbon footprint,” said Sladen. “These are the kinds of innovations needed to achieve net-zero targets.”
Miami-Dade’s strategic location near the Space Coast and its robust logistics and transportation sectors make it an ideal base for advancing sustainable aerospace solutions.
Setting the Tone for 2025
Zulu Pods embodies Opportunity Miami’s vision, blending innovation, inclusion, and sustainability to drive transformative change. It is a shining example of what’s possible when diverse voices and cutting-edge ideas converge in a supportive ecosystem.
“Zulu Pods is more than just a company—it’s proof of Miami’s potential to lead the future of aerospace,” said Rodrick Miller, President and CEO of the Miami-Dade Beacon Council. “Their success showcases how innovation and collaboration can create solutions that benefit both the local community and the world.”
As Zulu Pods expands, it inspires entrepreneurs and innovators across South Florida, setting the stage for a future defined by opportunity and growth.
“Believe in your vision and seek validation from the market,” Sladen advises. “Every interaction helps refine your idea and brings you closer to success.”
