As Miami continues to grow as an emerging global tech hub, and as one of the cities most vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, The Miami-Dade Beacon Council is hosting a panel at eMerge Americas to address the business of climate resilience.
You can register here for the Thursday panel.
The Beacon Council, which powers Opportunity Miami, is bringing together key partners driving innovation and fostering collaboration to create a more equitable future where sustainable climate innovation drives new industries, companies, and jobs for our local economy.
The discussion will include Galen Treuer, who leads Climate Tech and Economic Innovation for Miami-Dade County. He will speak on the ClimateReady Tech Hub, which Matt Haggman wrote about in November. Treuer also co-leads our Climate Tech Meetups.
Anya Freeman of Miami-based Kind Designs will also be on the panel to share more on their transformative 3-D printed sea walls, which we featured in our On Site video series. Watch our interview with Freeman and see the early stages of the company here.
If you attend, say hello! I’ll be there and would love to hear about your ideas for where we go next with Opportunity Miami.
WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Florida International University partnered on a survey to ask South Florida business owners and hiring managers about current and future workforce needs. The survey included questions on business challenges, retention and recruitment strategies, and future workforce needs.
Less than 20% of employers responded that they felt well-prepared for the evolving landscape of the County’s workforce. Most employers (70%) said a lack of qualified candidates was a challenge in their recruitment process. You can view the entire survey here.
As part of our commitment to talent and inclusion, Opportunity Miami and the higher institutions across Greater Miami that are members of the Academic Leaders Council put forward *new 2040 talent goals, in an effort to build the most diverse, skilled regional workforce in the hemisphere.
You can read more about these efforts in one of our previous newsletters written by Matt Haggman. You can also read the full Opportunity Miami x Academic Leaders Council report here.
