Miami is often in the spotlight as a booming real estate market. It is also at the forefront of the climate crisis, facing significant challenges – but also opportunities – to lead in the space of sustainable construction.
The built environment – everything from construction to operations to demolition of buildings – accounts for nearly half of all greenhouse gas emissions in the country. That number can be higher in major cities such as Miami.
With the rapid growth in real estate and resilience tech in Miami, we invite you to join us for our 15th (!) meetup happening on July 23rd at the Miami-Dade Beacon Council office in Brickell, focused on sustainable building practices.
Our region addresses these challenges head-on, through adaptation and mitigation strategies such as strengthening infrastructure and improving building codes. South Florida has also become a hub for innovation, promoting sustainable and resilient designs in large part due to federal and county support through the Risk and Resilience Tech Hub. We are starting to see some of that innovation come to life, in the form of companies such as Kind Designs, specializing in 3D printed marine construction. There is also an economic case to be made around sustainable development, as we learned in our latest Interview with JLL.
The meetup will focus on the future of the built environment in Miami-Dade County, spotlighting breakthrough innovations in sustainable and resilient construction that are reshaping how we design and build in a climate-challenged world.
From cutting-edge circular economy solutions to high-performing durable materials – meet the companies, researchers, and government officials leading the charge toward a more resilient Miami.
Eric Koehler from Titan America will discuss how the company is remixing the cement industry. You can watch our On Site video feature with Koehler at their cement plant in Medley. University of Miami Associate Professor Prannoy Suraneni will introduce new building materials, while architect Robert Werthamer from Zyscovich will speak on sustainable design, and Angela Kyle from JLL’s Sustainability division will introduce financing and investing in sustainable real estate.
This event is part of our ongoing partnership with the Miami-Dade County Innovation and Economic Development Office in our joint mission to catalyze smart, future-forward growth in South Florida—one building block at a time. It will be led by Galen Treuer with the Risk and Resilience Tech Hub.
We hope you can join us in learning how Miami is becoming a hub for resilience tech and sustainable development.
