As we prepare for a week of food and gratitude, Opportunity Miami is focused on how food innovation can drive sustainability. From reducing waste to improving access to healthy meals, sustainable practices are key to tackling food equity.
So this Thanksgiving, we invite you to revisit our podcast with Rini Greenfield, Founding General Partner at Rethink Food. The venture capital firm is, well, rethinking how we think about food by investing in entrepreneurs who are providing sustainable and accessible food and beverage solutions to a growing global population.
Food equity starts with addressing food waste, a $160 billion issue impacting our economy and environment. With nearly 40% of the food supply discarded, it's clear we need sustainable solutions to ensure resources nourish people - creating a future where everyone has access to healthy, affordable food while protecting our planet.
Homestead-based Fertile Earth Worm Farm is tackling both by picking up food waste from commercial establishments across South Florida, composting it, and using the soil for plants. Founder Dr. Lanette Sobel has helped divert over 30 million pounds of discarded food from our landfills.
