Beating the heat this summer: Explore our stories on resilience and innovation with Emergency Management and Blue Frontier.
As summer returns to South Florida, so too does the growing intensity of our climate challenges—extreme heat, heavy rains, flooding, and the looming threat of storms. With hurricane season officially underway, the question is more pressing than ever: how climate-ready are we?
This week on Opportunity Miami, we’re revisiting two features that highlight how our region is preparing for — and rethinking — disaster response and resilience through innovation.
Miami-Dade’s Emergency Readiness
Just last week, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue hosted an advanced emergency response training session at its headquarters, preparing a skilled team of responders to lead in times of crisis. It’s part of a broader County-led effort covering 41 different disaster scenarios — from hurricanes and flooding to extreme heat and even active shooter events.
“We run the gamut of disasters — preparation, response, mitigation, and recovery,” Pete Gomez, Director of the Miami-Dade Department of Emergency Management, told us in an interview last summer.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also hosted a storm preparedness conference, and the County has mailed out updated severe weather guides to households across the region. With experts predicting an above-normal hurricane season, public awareness, and readiness are key.
Innovation Meets Urgency
Last year, South Florida endured weeks where the heat index exceeded 105°F. This summer is already off to a sweltering start, and the County is opening dozens of cooling centers to provide relief.
Keeping cool is just one part of the equation. The other is innovation – how we cool our homes and buildings.
Blue Frontier is a South Florida startup reinventing air conditioning — one of the biggest drivers of electricity demand during heat waves. Founded by Daniel Betts, the company’s innovative A/C technology improves efficiency while drastically reducing humidity.
From its start as a bold idea to a market-ready product, Blue Frontier’s story is now being taught at Harvard Business School in a new case study titled “Blue Frontier: Disrupting Air Conditioning.”
Coincidentally, it was written by professor Dr. Rosabeth Moss Kanter, who was previously featured in an interview to discuss how Miami can become a global climate solutions hub.
“For policymakers, the case study affirms that bold climate innovation can thrive when the right conditions are in place,” the company shared in a statement.
We first caught up with Betts in May 2023 for an On Site feature, which you can watch here.
Climate preparedness today goes beyond gearing up for the next storm. Today, South Florida is reshaping our resilience through policy, partnerships, and innovation. If you haven’t already, check out our county’s severe weather and emergency readiness guide. Stay safe!
